The Toronto Japanese Film Festival (TJFF), scheduled to take place from June 12th<\/sup> to 26th<\/sup> at the JCCC\u2019s Kobayashi Hall will feature 25 films that highlight the multifaceted range of one of the world\u2019s largest film industries. This year’s festival is particularly significant as it commemorates the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The festival includes several premiere screenings including the Canadian debut of the highly anticipated film Cells at work!<\/em> (\u306f\u305f\u3089\u304f\u7d30\u80de), directed by Hideki Takeuchi, renowned for Thermae Romae<\/em> and Fly Me to Saitama<\/em> which open\u2019s the 14th<\/sup> annual festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"TJFF<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

One of this year\u2019s highlights is the director\u2019s cut of The vow from Hiroshima<\/em> (\u30d2\u30ed\u30b7\u30de\u3078\u306e\u8a93\u3044 \u30b5 \u30fc\u30ed\u30fc\u7bc0\u5b50\u3068\u3068\u3082\u306b), an intimate portrayal of Setsuko Thurlow, a courageous survivor of the bombing whose decades-long activism culminates in her presence on the Nobel Prize stage. Following the screening, Ms. Thurlow will participate in a panel discussion, offering invaluable insights into her life and the profound impact of her experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premieres<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

North American and Canadian Premieres include Fumihiro Sori\u2019s Hakkenden: fiction and reality<\/em> \u300c\u516b\u72ac\u4f1d\u300dfeaturing a cast of some of Japan\u2019s finest actors lead by Koji Yakusho (Perfect Days<\/em>) in a tale combining the struggles of an Edo era artist and his family with the dizzyingly huge battle fantasies of his imagination; Yu Irie\u2019s thrilling samurai swashbuckler Samurai fury: Muromachi outsiders<\/em>\u300c\u5ba4\u753a\u7121\u983c; Shogo Kusano\u2019s Aimitagai<\/em> \u300c\u30a2\u30a4\u30df\u30bf\u30ac\u30a4\u300da gentle rumination on the chain reactions of fate; Akiko Ohku\u2019s She tought me serendipity<\/em> \u300c\u4eca\u65e5\u306e\u7a7a\u304c\u4e00\u756a\u597d\u304d\u3001\u3068\u307e\u3060\u8a00\u3048\u306a\u3044\u50d5\u306f \u300da striking magic realist romance built around a shocking twist; and Daihachi Yoshida\u2019s intimately surreal character study Teki cometh<\/em>\u300c\u6575\u300dwinner of the Tokyo International Film Festival\u2019s Best Film, Director and Actor. Director Ohku will visit the festival to present the North American premiere of her film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For anime buffs there is the North American premiere of Yuurei Sakuragi\u2019s Give it all<\/em>\u300c \u304c\u3093\u3070\u3063\u3066\u3044\u304d\u307e\u3063\u3057\u3087\u3044\u202f\u300d, the exciting and heartfelt story of a high school girl\u2019s rowing team nominated for the Japanese Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also making North American premieres are Ayuko Tsukahara\u2019s box-office ruling thriller Last mile<\/em> \u300c\u30e9\u30b9\u30c8\u30de\u30a4\u30eb\u300dnominated for Japanese academy Awards for Best Film, Director and Actress; and the gorgeous environmental fable River returns<\/em> \u300c\u5149\u308b\u5ddd \u300dwith writer\/director Masakazu Kaneko in attendance; and Yuji Kakizaki\u2019s Seppuku: the sun goes down<\/em>\u300c\u967d\u304c\u843d\u3061\u308b\u300d a powerful tale of a devoted samurai husband and wife\u2019s final day as they await the moment of his court-ordered ritual suicide. Director Kakizaki and cast members Yuka Takeshima, Masayuki Deai and Yuka Sasada will be travel to Japan for the screening. Mark Gill powerfully chronicles the turbulent life and brilliant work of photographer Masahisa Fukase in Ravens<\/em>\u300c\u30ec\u30a4\u30d6\u30f3\u30ba\u300dwith Shogun star Tadanobu Asano in the lead role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The samurai wield both swords and go pieces in Kazuya Shiraishi\u2019s taut and thoughtful Bushido [Gobangiri]<\/em> \u300c\u7881\u76e4\u65ac\u308a \u300d, one of 2024\u2019s best films and winner of the Black Dragon Award at the Udine Far East Film Festival and the witty and uplifting 90 years old \u2013 so what?<\/em> \u300c\u4e5d\u5341\u6b73\u3002\u4f55\u304c\u3081\u3067\u305f\u3044\u300d from Tetsu Maeda round out this year\u2019s festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
