The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre\u2019s 12th annual Toronto Japanese Film Festival (TJFF<\/a>) will be presented in person from June 8 to 22 at the JCCC\u2019s Kobayashi Hall. The festival has now grown into one of the largest film events of its kind in the world and is recognized by the Japanese film industry as a vital conduit for bringing Japanese film to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Father<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

TJFF is programmed to reflect the rich diversity of the world’s 4th largest film industry. The festival opens with the International Premiere of Izuri Narushima\u2019s Father of the Milky Way Railroad<\/em> [\u9280\u6cb3 \u9244\u9053 \u306e \u7236] (we will tell you more about this one in the new days), a star-studded historical biopic of the beloved children\u2019s author Kenji Miyazawa. The festival closes with the North American premiere of Tetsu Maeda\u2019s screwball samurai comedy We\u2019re broke, my lord <\/em>(\u5927\u540d\u5012\u7523).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North American and Canadian premieres include Kei Ishikawa\u2019s A man<\/em> (\u3042\u308b \u7537), winner of the Japanese Academy Award for Best Film (we will present it to you later during the festival), Lee Sung-Il\u2019s controversial love story Wandering<\/em>, Yuji Nakae\u2019s foodie drama The zen diary<\/em> (\u571f\u3092\u55b0\u3089\u3046\u5341\u4e8c\u30f5\u6708), Ryohei Kitamura\u2019s fantasy The three sisters of Tenmasou Inn<\/em> (\u5929\u9593\u8358\u306e\u4e09\u59c9\u59b9), Norihiro Koizumi\u2019s Sumi-e brush-painting drama The lines that define me<\/em>, Masayuki Suzuki\u2019s hilarious love letter to the rituals of the Japanese bath, Yudo<\/em>. In Takahisa Zeze\u2019s Fragment of the last will<\/em>, a Japanese POW tries to escape across Siberia to fulfill a sacred promise to his family; Ayuko Tsukahara\u2019s As long as we both shall live<\/em> combines fantasy, action, and romance in a highly stylized 19th Century Tokyo; Sho Miyake\u2019s award-winning Small, slow but steady<\/em> (\u30b1\u30a4\u30b3\u76ee\u3092\u6f84\u307e\u305b\u3066) follows a young female boxer as she trains and fights her way through the pandemic era. In Shunsukle Kariyama\u2019s charming BL Metamorphosis<\/em>, two women, one 17 years old, the other 78, bond over their love of \u201dboy\u2019s love\u201d manga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anime fans will find much to enjoy in the live-action drama about the anime industry Anime supremacy<\/em> (\u30cf\u30b1\u30f3\u30a2\u30cb\u30e1!); the Canadian premiere of master Keiichi Hara\u2019s new movie: Lonely castle in the mirror<\/em> and a 4K rerelease of the classic 1993 Japan-India coproduction Ramayana: the legend of prince Rama<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other screenings include Kazuya Shiraishi\u2019s shocking portrait of a mass murderer, Lesson in murder<\/em>; Shuichi Okita\u2019s quirky comedy The fish tale<\/em> (\u3055\u304b\u306a\u306e\u3053), with Non (\u306e\u3093) (we\u2019ll tell you about this one too), Hiroshi Nishitani\u2019s hit crime thriller Silent Parade<\/em>; Eiji Uchida\u2019s comic caper flick Offbeat cops<\/em>. Japan\u2019s favourite fine arts conmen are back in We make antics! Osaka dreams<\/em> and actor Teruyuki Kagawa give a bravura central performance as a man with no memories in the artful mystery Roleless<\/em> (\u5bae\u677e \u3068 \u5c71\u4e0b). TIFF favourite Chie Hayakawa\u2019s tender and devastating inquiry into how we value our seniors, PLAN 75<\/em>, returns for an encore screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As always, the festival includes visiting filmmakers, musical performances, art exhibitions, and Japanese food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
